China's New Wave of Christian Persecution

Week of June 19th-25th…

In the Henan province of China, religious believers are required to complete an online form and obtain approval to attend worship services. The government has introduced an application called "Smart Religion," through which individuals must make online reservations to attend services in churches, mosques, or Buddhist temples. This app serves as a tool for tracking and controlling religious gatherings, with applicants having to provide personal information and adhere to strict regulations. These measures are part of the Chinese Communist Party's efforts to exert control over religious activities, including online worship services and fundraising.

China's crackdown on religious freedom, reminiscent of Mao's era, goes beyond the use of technology as the CCP's regime, led by Xi Jinping, employs high-tech methods to tighten its grip on faith communities, resulting in an alarming increase in Christian persecution and targeted oppression. The urgent situation demands immediate action, and the international community must not ignore the plight of religious minorities in China. It is crucial to stand against the Chinese Communist Party's oppressive tactics, which not only delegitimize the regime but also violate basic human rights. People of faith worldwide must voice their concerns, reach out to their representatives, and exert pressure on businesses supporting China financially. Concurrently, Myanmar experiences escalating atrocities and efforts to suppress dissent, with the military junta's two-year control marked by grave human rights abuses, including the recent beheading of 17 villagers by soldiers. The international community, including the United States, should condemn these actions and demand justice, while providing support for courageous religious leaders like Baptist pastor Colman Sampson, who was arrested for standing up for their communities. By taking action, speaking out, engaging with elected officials, and urging businesses to reconsider their partnerships with China, we can make a difference in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of religious communities in both China and Myanmar, ensuring that the voices of the oppressed are heard and respected.

As the dire situation in China continues to unfold, it is of utmost importance to pray for the people of China. Pray for the protection and resilience of religious believers who face persecution, that they may find strength and courage in their faith. Pray for the Chinese Communist Party leaders, that their hearts may be transformed and they may recognize the value of religious freedom and human rights. Pray for international leaders and organizations to take a firm stand against these violations, urging them to prioritize the protection of religious minorities. And finally, pray for the global community to come together in solidarity, raising awareness, and taking action to bring an end to the oppression faced by religious communities in China. Let us pray fervently, advocating for justice, compassion, and the restoration of religious freedom in China.
